First smart meters for Scotland

Scottish Hydro Electric, part of Scottish and Southern Energy, is the first utility to introduce smart meters to its Scottish customers. The utility provides services to 8.5 million customers, and was recently ranked No. 1 UK Domestic Electricity and Gas Supplier in Customer Satisfaction by J.D. Power and Associates – the first time any supplier in the UK has been ranked No. 1 for both electricity and gas.

The smart meter deployment is part of the company’s drive to continue to improve service to customers. The first meters are being trialed in Alyth, with a view to establishing their effect on energy consumption. The meters – which will collect data from both electric and gas meters – will also provide customers with real-time information about their energy usage, what it is costing them, and what the effect of this usage is having on the environment.

The company said that this trial, which is being conducted in association with Alyth Environmental Group (AEG) and Save Cash and Reduce Fuel (SCARF), also involves the use of a wide range of energy efficiency measures with the aim of helping the entire community cut its energy use by 10% over the next two years.
