first:utility offers free smart meters to U.K. consumers

Warwick, U.K. — (METERING.COM) — March 12, 2009 – Independent energy company, first:utility has announced that it will no longer charge customers to replace their electricity and gas meters with its smart meters.

Previously, an installation cost of £49 per meter was charged for electricity only and £99 for gas and electric.

first:utility is the only energy company in the UK to install smart meters as standard to every customer. The smart meters take readings every 30 minutes which are sent back to the company’s billing centre on a daily basis using the mobile (GPRS) network

In a statement first:utility says it aims to challenge the poor service and outdated metering technology that it feels has become the status quo in the U.K. energy market. The company also aims to bring its experience in the telecoms industry to modernize the way bills are produced and improve customer service, it says.
