first:utility wins housing industry award for smart meter rollout

Warwick, U.K. — (METERING.COM) — November 10, 2009 – Independent U.K. energy supplier first:utility has been awarded the “Housing Product of the Year” award at the Housebuilding Innovation Awards for its rollout of smart meters.
first:utility’s entry focused on the company’s rollout of smart metered electricity and gas, working with developers including Galliard Homes, Miller Homes and The Andersons Group to install smart meters in over 13,000 new homes being built across the U.K.
“first:utility’s offering is a compelling proposition for house builders and developers, particularly with an increasing emphasis on sustainable housing, and it’s great to get recognition from the industry,” said Martin Moir, head of sales at first:utility.

The judges comments included the fact that first:utility is “…a company that knows housebuilders and their needs well”. They went on to say: “With a product so attuned to government regulations and climate change, and its ability to benefit both housebuilder and customer, it is clear why first:utility is the winner of the Housing product of the year category.”
first:utility’s smart meters take automated readings of energy consumption at half-hourly intervals throughout the day; which are sent wirelessly to the company’s Warwick-based head office.

In working with developers each developer is assigned a first:utility dedicated New Build Manager who makes proactive contact to plan meter installations in advance. The company also works with show home staff to explain the benefits of smart energy supply and provide sales literature and handover packs.
