HAN interoperability demonstrated in Britain

London, U.K. — (METERING.COM) — April 3 2012 – Britain’s Smart Specification Working Group (SSWG) has successfully demonstrated the capability of smart metering devices from leading manufacturers utilizing the Group’s set of open specifications to work together in a home area network (HAN).

The SSWG’s specifications are based on the ZigBee platform and they  support communication and networking between core HAN components, including smart gas and electricity meters, communications hubs, head end systems and in-home devices.

“Our aim is to work closely with DECC’s program and de-risk, optimize and accelerate smart metering rollouts,” commented SSWG spokesperson and MD of Elster Electricity UK, Richard St Clair. “We have established a HAN protocol that works with products and solutions that are available in the marketplace today, and are making great strides forward with smart metering.”

The SSWG was established in mid-2010 as a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to creating an open and inclusive set of interface specifications to support Britain’s smart metering deployment.

Companies participating in the interoperability demonstration included Elster, Green Energy Options (GEO), Huawei, Itron, Landis+Gyr, Onzo, Secure Meters and Trilliant.

The SSWG is currently working on the WAN and prepay specifications, which should be completed by mid-year.
