IEC membership broadens

In what appears to be the beginnings of a trend, Kenya has become the third country (in four months) to jump from the Affiliate Country Programme to membership in the IEC. The move came in February 2005, following Kazakhstan and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Commenting on the event, IEC General Secretary Aharon Amit said: “With countries now from Africa, Europe and Central Asia using the Affiliate Country Programme as a starting point to become members of the IEC, I am happy to say that the programme, which has always been global in scope, is beginning to live up to expectations. Speaking on behalf of our entire community, I welcome Kenya’s participation in IEC work, particularly in those fields that are of specific interest to Kenya.”

Kenya joins South Africa, Egypt and Tunisia as IEC members located in Africa.
