Irish utility meets the challenges of deregulation

Dublin, Republic of Ireland — (METERING.COM) — September 16, 2006 – Electricity Supply Board (ESB), one of the largest service providers in Ireland, has selected EMC Corporation’s Symmetrix solution to meet the challenges of opening up the electricity supply market to other market participants, as a result of deregulation. EMC is a provider of information management and storage systems.

ESB has the franchise to collect and distribute meter readings on behalf of all electricity supply companies participating in the market. Collection and management of meter readings is handled by an SAP Utilities software solution, with similar SAP implementations for ESB’s own billing and customer contact services.

To achieve operational objectives, ESB required a high availability disaster tolerant IT system with the scalability to meet future growth needs. The infrastructure also needed to facilitate the movement of applications between ESB’s data centers to provide flexibility in application deployment.

The utility has chosen EMC’s Symmetrix DMX solution because it offered the functionality required, as well as the necessary remote replication and point-in-time Business Continuity Volume capabilities.
