Elektromed has been awarded a contract by Istanbul Water Distribution Authority to supply, install and commission more than 100,000 integrated smart card prepayment water meters.
Smart card prepayment water meters are already well known among key account water consumers in Istanbul, with 30,000 prepayment meters having been supplied by Elektromed since 1999. The first recipients were the bulk water consumers and subsequently it has been expanded to other consumer types.
Prepayment solutions have become a focus in Turkey over the past two decades, because of their efficacy in improving revenue collection. As a result Turkey has become one of the key prepayment markets in the world, although the regulations do not yet allow prepayment electric meters pending the privatisation of the stateowned electric distribution company.
The prepayment water meter system in Istanbul is expected to allow customers to save almost 15 percent on their water bills, because of the greater control they have over their consumption. Installation has already begun with a 150 person team to complete the project within a 12-month target period.
“The prepayment system will make a significant impact on water saving and revenue collection,” says Ahmet Kaya, CEO of Elektromed, adding that this new project is timely as Istanbul’s water reserves are limited after two years of drought.
Elektromed offers 2-way communication smart card technology and is a pioneer in the Turkish market with its 3 million digital meter production and the supply and installation of 1 million smart card prepayment gas and 400,000 smart card prepayment water meters.
