London, U.K. — (METERING.COM) — February 2, 2012 – A new two-way IP data service targeting the growing global market for smart metering and other machine-to-machine communications, BGAN M2M, has been launched by mobile satellite communications provider Inmarsat.
BGAN M2M is intended as a low cost solution suitable for M2M applications that would typically send between 1 Mb and 50 Mb per terminal per month.
This offers a scalable solution for smart metering and SCADA, as well as other applications including remote asset monitoring and meteorological and environmental data reporting.
“BGAN M2M is a new service that is made-to-measure for the M2M market,” explained Drew Brandy, vice-president, Industry, at Inmarsat. “BGAN M2M runs on a stable satellite network that offers high reliability, and which is designed specifically for IP data. It extends the reach of M2M applications to cover infrastructure assets that are remote or geographically dispersed.”
BGAN M2M will be available from February 15, 2012 through existing BGAN distribution partners and service providers, offering value-added applications and service integration. The service launches with the Hughes 9502 BGAN M2M terminal, building on the successful Hughes 9201-M2M product.
