Monitoring Energy Use Brings Down Cost in UK

The remote metering department at Western Power, the electricity distribution company for south-west England and south and west Wales, with 2.5 million customers, is working with Jekyll Electronic Technology to provide customers with more cost-effective ways of remotely collecting meter data. Jekyll is a UK-based manufacturer of ‘zero power’ telemetry technology.

All sites with a demand higher than 100kW require half-hourly data collection, and by using the latest technologies such as SMS and GPRS, the cost of collection can be significantly reduced. Half-hourly meter data collection gives users an energy profile that can be analysed to reduce energy costs, and by using cost-effective technologies, half-hourly collection could be extended to the 250,000 customers in the UK who use between 50 and 100 kW.
