Orange and Huawei have signed an agreement to further their collaboration in a bid to improve energy efficiency in their telecom networks.Both companies have affirmed their commitment to reduce power consumption and carbon emissions and have developed energy efficient features for fixed and mobile networks, which Orange has begun to roll out, according to Total Telecom.
Mari-Noëlle Jégo-Laveissière, senior EVP of Orange's innovation, marketing and technologies division, said: “This partnership will accelerate the implementation of high energy-efficient solutions in Orange's infrastructures to achieve our 2020 objective of reducing CO2 emissions per customer-usage by 50%."
Energy efficient networks
Orange and Huawei made the announcement this week, committing to make networks 'greener'.
The two will conduct research into new components and signal processing algorithms, that will improve the performance of mobile network power amplifiers.
In addition, the operators will look to utilise network functions virtualisation (NFV) in order to optimise network performance. They will also use liquid cooling, adds Total Telecom, “which is reportedly more energy efficient than air cooling – and conduct tests of solar and wind-based renewable energy technology.
Ms Jégo-Laveissière noted: "This innovative approach in research and development of ecosystems will assist society in energy and environmental transition.”
The co-operation between Orange and Huawei has “enabled the design of customer connector cards that reduce energy consumption by 50% for ADSL access and 70% for fibre-optic access,” says a report by Telecom Lead.
The UK-based mobile network operator says that it is looking at assessing the cards for deployment on their fixed networks.
Yet another area of collaboration is to develop a modular convergent infrastructure for fixed and mobile services. Huawei has set up research laboratories in Shenzhen. Orange plans to launch a first pilot trial for this solution in 2016.
Both companies are reportedly aiming to meet their 'zero watt @ zero load' vision.
