The European arm of Japanese semiconductor manufacturer Renesas will use Embedded World 2014, in Nuremberg, Germany, as a platform to launch a robot rally.

Renesas Electronics Europe will unveil the continent’s first MCU Car Rally competition for students of European universities.

Teams will have one year to build an autonomous, self-guided car from a supplied kit of mechatronic components.

They must optimise the hardware and software before competing against other teams at the MCU Rally Challenge in Germany in early 2015.

The winning team will qualify for a sponsored trip to the Renesas Micon Car Rally in Japan in August 2015.

The MCU Rally has been running for 20 years in Japan. Renesas has also sponsored rally events in China and Vietnam.

The contest is open to all European university students, although priority will be given to students from Renesas’ partner universities.
