Essen, Germany — (METERING.COM) — January 26, 2010 – Germany’s second largest electricity producer, RWE, through its electricity distribution company RWE Rheinland Westfalen Netz, has established RWE Metering GmbH as a wholly owned subsidiary as of January 1, 2010.

In a statement the company said the market for smart meters has been given new impetus from the start of the year, with the requirements of Germany’s new Energy Act as well as those of the European 3rd Energy Package, under which smart electric meters must be installed in 80 percent of homes by 2020.

RWE Metering GmbH offers all services related to smart metering technology, including technical standardization. The company will supply not only companies in the RWE Group, but also public utilities throughout Germany.

RWE has started a pilot to install smart meters in the city of Mulheim on Ruhr and plans to expand the project citywide by the end of 2011.

“With the new company we are positioning ourselves in a growth market,” said Dr Arndt Neuhaus, chief executive of RWE Rheinland Westfalen Netz.
