RWE partners with Siemens for distributed energy IT system

RWE has partnered with Siemens for the establishment of a distributed energy IT system.

Siemens AG has engaged in a contract with German utility RWE for the establishment of an IT system, which will connect a large number of distributed energy resources to increase the utility’s grid performance.

According to a joint press statement, the collaboration of Siemens and RWE will result in a cost effective mass market solution for integrating producers, consumers and storage units.

The IT system, dubbed “RWE Smartpool”  will expand ways in which distribution grid operators can integrate distributed energy generating facilities to optimise grid stability, as grid requirements become more complex.

Once developed, the the IT system will be utilised by new market participants.

Siemens believes the new system will be well equipped to meet the challenges of an increasingly digitised energy world, as it will use the decentralised energy management (DEMS)  system based on Energy IP, Siemens’ scalable platform for smart grid applications.

Commenting on the development, Dr. Joachim Schneider, CTO of RWE Deutschland AG, said the project is one of many innovative steps that must be taken, in order to successfully manage the energy transition to the new energy mix.

Mr Schneider added that, as a result, public works and grid operators will be able to use RWE Smartpool to optimise the marketing of what are frequently small amounts of locally generated electricity

Renewable energy storage

In August, RWE unveiled its €2m power-to-gas energy storage plant to benefit consumers in German cities of Arnsberg, Bielefeld, Osnabrück, Dortmund, Minden, and Münster.

The gas-to-power plant uses electrolysis to convert excess electricity from renewable energy sources into hydrogen. The hydrogen is then stored within the natural gas network and converted back into electricity when needed.

Adding to this, the waste heat from the electrolyser is also utilised via a connection with the local district heating network.

The system is designed by UK company ITM Power, reported to be measured at overall energy efficiency of 86%.
