Under the partnership, Silver Spring Networks will increase coverage of its smart wireless IoT network to provide connectivity to approximately 28,000 smart streetlights in London and administrative divisions of Barking and Dagenham.
Silver Spring Network will collaborate with network firm UrbanControl to connect 12,000 smart streetlights in London and approximately 15,500 units in Barking and Dagenham.
The development falls under efforts by London, Dagenham and Barking to expand deployment of smart city technologies to improve the quality of lives for residents and beauty of cities' infrastructure, reported a local publication.
The move will help the three cities to reduce their energy costs and carbon emissions and in the stabilising grid networks during peak demand periods.
Giles Radford, the highways manager of the City of London Corporation, said: “’The Square Mile’ is a global financial hub and Central Business District through which over 450,000 commuters pass through daily. The smart street lights will help the City of London achieve its energy savings goals and reduce operational costs, while also improving service reliability and helping to lay a platform for future IoT applications.”
“The reliability, resilience and cyber security of the system were key requirements for us. We thoroughly evaluated technology options which were proven to connect critical devices at-scale, and guarantee highly reliable coverage, regardless of where the device is connected in the City.”
Silver Spring Networks and AMI connectivity
Meanwhile, an announcement made in late June by the Grant County Public Utility District (Grant PUD) in the US says the utility selected Silver Spring Networks to deploy an advanced metering programme in which the solutions provider will deploy its IoT network Gen5 to provide connectivity to over 47,000 smart meters.
Commenting on the development, Chuck Allen, public affairs officer for Grant PUD, said: “As the backbone of power distribution in the US, public power needs technology that is flexible enough to meet its own set of unique challenges.” Read more...
