In Northern Europe, four Norwegian power utilities have ordered 50,000 meters from manufacturer Kamstrup for a smart meter rollout.
A consortium consisting of energy companies Guldbrandsdal Energi, Valdres Energiverk, Eidefoss and Vang Energiverk have asked Kamstrup to supply a smart metering system that includes, meters, communication system, central system and integration.
The consortium has also forged a hosting agreement with Kamstrup, which they claim will save making “costly investments in IT hardware” or establishing unprofitable operations departments.
Bjørg Brestad, chief executive cfficer of Valdres Energiverk, said: “It was important for us to enter into an agreement with a stable and reliable supplier, whom we know with great certainty will be in the market for many years to come.”
“With this agreement, the four power utilities have the same setup for ensuring efficient operations as the larger energy suppliers, such as DONG Energy with one million metering points,” says Jesper Daugaard, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing in Kamstrup.
The smart meter rollout is scheduled for the beginning of 2016 and will continue until the end of 2018.
Norwegian smart meter rollout success
Over the past few months, Kamstrup has signed agreements with several Norwegian utilities including Energi Nett, Smart Strøm Nordvest and Dalane Energi.
In March 2015, DONG Energy awarded Kamstrup a tender for one million remotely read electricity meters worth €239m.
Kamstrup said it beat competition from 30 international suppliers to secure the order from DONG Energy Eldistribution to provide metering units for the Greater Copenhagen area until 2034.
Commenting on the vendor selection, Morten Buchgreitz, executive vice president at DONG Energy, said: “I’m convinced that Kamstrup is the right partner for us.
“Every day, approximately 1,500 electricity customers will have their meter replaced in the period from 2017 to 2020 and together with Kamstrup, we’ll do our utmost to ensure that it takes place in a satisfactory way for our customers.”
DONG Energy has chosen the OMNIA suite of meters “that allows new functionality to be uploaded directly to the meters to ensure that the solution can live up to future demands as well”, says Per Asmussen, CEO of Kamstrup.
