Smart water metering to be reviewed in U.K.

London, U.K. — (METERING.COM) — July 22, 2009

U.K. water research facilitator UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) has appointed consulting and business services group Mouchel to lead an industry-wide review on smart water metering.

The review will examine the case for the development of smart metering in the U.K. water industry and will form the basis of guidance on the development of cost beneficial metering strategies.

Intelligent metering could lead to better demand management in the water industry and help to reduce water stress in increasingly dry regions of the U.K., ultimately enabling the development of intelligent distribution networks.

The review will include an assessment of smart metering strategies adopted by other countries or utilities and a market survey of available technologies in order to develop a strategic approach and business case model.

“Mouchel is delighted to have the opportunity to support the U.K. water industry’s research into intelligent metering,” said Brendan McAndrew, Mouchel’s Strategic Consulting technical director. “Smart metering has the potential to change the way we think about and use drinking water on a daily basis. The twin pressures of population growth and climate change make it all the more important to shift perceptions about the value of this precious resource. Water metering is a sensitive issue and an open and objective approach, which takes account of the real costs and benefits, is essential.”
