German utility begins energy storage project with Italian firm


In a press statement, the Italian based PCS solutions provider said it has started the development of the system for a secure and efficient storage and conversion of power generated from renewable energy sources into the grid.

The plant will consists of Nidec ASI’s energy conversion technologies and LG Chem batteries and is part of the utility’s effort to stabilise the grid by providing TSOs with backup power generated from renewable energy sources.

[quote] In addition to the Lunen storage plant, STEAG said it will add in some five more plants in the North-Rhine- Westphalia and Saarland regions.

Nidec ASI’s kickstart of the project signed agreement in November 2015 follows the firm’s completion of similar projects for the French Islands-including La Réunion, Corsica, and French Guiana-as well as for Italy’s Terna and a smart micro grid in Chile.

Energy storage in Europe

In other energy storage news coming out of Europe, E.ON UK  kickstarted a pilot project to understand how its commercial and industrial customers can benefit from solar generation and battery storage.

According to a UK publication, the utility company partnered with energy storage company RedT Energy for the rollout of the project in Somerset in South West England.

The London headquartered energy storage solutions provider supplied E.ON with its battery storage technology.

Commenting on the development, Eliano Russo, the head of energy storage solutions at E.ON, said: “We have recently launched a residential PV and battery storage product to our customers in Germany and as we develop our experience from this project with [logistics company] JB Wheaton we are interested in speaking with commercial and industrial customers in the UK who would be interested in investing in a battery storage solution.”

The 4.0 kilowatt battery storage system will be used by JB Wheaton to store power generated from its on-site 3.5MW solar panel during the day and from the grid during off-peak demand periods for use during on-peak demand periods.
