Swedish utility signs large AMR contract

Swedish energy company Fortum has entered into an agreement with Telenor Cinclus, a subsidiary of the Norwegian telecommunications provider Telenor, to deliver automatic meter reading solutions to Fortum’s 835,000 electricity customers in Sweden. This is equivalent to 16% of all Swedish households, and the agreement is the largest of its kind within the Nordic region.

Implementation will start this year, and all households are expected to have the solution in place in the first half of 2009. Fortum says the modern and flexible platform will allow it to offer better service to its customers, and to satisfy customers’ needs for other services such as water and gas metering and temperature control. The utility will work with Comsel, its own subsidiary, on technology and with Telenor Mobile Sweden on mobile communication.
