September 13, 2010 – Eandis, the largest grid company in Flanders (Belgium) operating for seven Distribution System Operators (DSO’s), will be presenting a unique technology concept for real time smart metering via Power Line Communication (PLC) at the “Metering Europe” conference in Vienna. During the conference, the company will also report on the first results of a field trial in 2 850 Flemish homes.
Patented technology and Proof of Concept
Eandis’ patented technology concept consists of a PLC filtering method which considerably improves data communication via low voltage networks. Next to PLC filtering, the Eandis concept also uses multiple gateways to connect the PLC segments to broadband Internet.
To evaluate the performance of this concept in real life it was decided to conduct a field trial or ‘Proof of Concept’ (PoC). In this PoC, the grid companies Eandis and Infrax are collaborating closely. Between April and June 2010 Eandis installed about 3 000 smart electricity meters and 1 400 smart gas meters in 2 850 homes near Mechelen (in Flanders). Infrax has a similar pilot project with 300 meters.
To prepare and evaluate the proof of concept, Eandis installed a unique smart metering testing laboratory on its premises.
For more information on the Eandis technology concept and first results of the proof of concept, please attend our presentation (“Eandis’ concept for real time smart metering; first results PoC 2010”) on September 23rd from 9h30 to 10h by Patrick Devos, Program Manager Smart Metering, Eandis cvba, Belgium (during Session 6).
