U.K. consumers confused between smart meters and in-home displays

London, U.K. — (METERING.COM) — August 26, 2010 – British consumers are confused between smart meters and energy monitors, with over a third of Which? members thinking they are the same thing, the consumer organization has found.

In a survey of 2,391 members done in June, Which? found that while 91 percent of the members were aware that energy monitors can show electricity usage in real time, there was much misunderstanding surrounding their capabilities. Nearly half of those asked thought that they could show gas usage and 19 percent thought they could send information directly to the energy supplier.

Only around one in ten of the respondents fully understood the differences between the two types of devices.

“We’re not surprised people are puzzled – with messages about both coming from all directions, it’s easy to get the two mixed up,” said Which? energy researcher Hazel Cottrell.
