UK Lib Dems target water utilities

London, U.K. – (METERING.COM) — September 13, 2006 – Political party Liberal Democrats are planning to call for ‘wasteful’ water firms to be converted into not-for-profit companies at their autumn conference, which starts on September 17.

The party accuses water utilities of making record profits while at the same time failing to meet leakage targets. It also says that compulsory water metering should be introduced in areas of water scarcity, as is the case in the south-east of the country.

Chris Huhne, the party’s environment spokesman, says: “In any area which has hosepipe bans, drought orders and real water shortages, people feel very strongly that they would prefer to have water metering and water rather than no metering and no water.”
