Water meters: French utility uses Sigfox to create smart network

In Europe, French water utility Sogedo this week announced it will implement a collection of meter reading services developed by Internet of Things company Sigfox to improve its operations and network efficiency.

According ta Sogdeo, the Sigfox solution includes automatic remote water-meter reading and real time analysis of usage data for customers.

France’s fourth largest water distributor said the solution will allow it to optimise infrastructure management utilising District Metering Areas (DMAs), Metering & Smart Energy International has learnt.

Commenting on the development, Nicolas Vivian, technical director of Sogedo, said: “Our partnership with Sigfox enables quick implementation of smart-utility features across our entire system, which will improve performance of water-service providers and make them more efficient and competitive.”

Mr Vivian added that Sigfox’s integrated connectivity means that any water meter installed on the water network can transmit data.

Sigfox IoT solutions in Europe

The news follows the announcement by Norwegian provider of RF modules and wireless connectivity solutions Radiocrafts in late October, the release of its Sigfox-certified module for IoT applications.

According to a statement, the new Radiocrafts Sigfox Ready radio module for IoT “has been certified to assure optimal connectivity performance on the Sigfox global network.”

Metering & Smart Energy International reported that the marrying of the Sigfox-certified module with the Sigfox global network affords IoT adopters low-cost, low-power and out-of-the-box wireless connectivity for varied IoT applications.

The Spanish platform provider for IoT solutions, smart city and machine-to-machine applications Libelium also added Sigfox capability to its open source wireless sensor platform Waspmote and its portfolio of wireless sensor devices in October.

The decision to add Sigfox wireless connectivity was aimed at speeding up the development of smart cities and Internet of Things projects, requiring low-energy, long-range wireless data transmission.
