68% of Americans have never heard of the Smart Grid – Harris poll

March 10, 2010 – Over nine hundred utility executives, government regulators, and engineers met at the Metering America conference this week to discuss the future of energy use and the smart grid.

However, a Harris Poll has highlighted the fact that although U.S. utilities have committed billions of dollars to upgrade the electric grid by installing new “smart meters” in homes and businesses. about two-thirds of Americans (68 percent) have never heard the term “smart grid” and 63 percent don’t know what a smart meter is.

The good news from the Harris Poll shows that if the price of electricity changes according to how much it actually costs to produce, three out of four people want to be able to see and control how much electricity they are using.
