US utility trials Sensus’ VantagePoint intelligent lighting solution


Under the first phase of the pilot project, the VantagePoint Lighting Control Solution was to remotely monitor and control area lighting at the utility’s operations centre in Montgomery, Alabama.

Commenting on the pilot project, Jim Fleming, principal engineer at Alabama Power said: “While there were only a few lights in the trial, the system met our expectations to be able to control the lights and provide status.”

According to a company release, the trial forms part of three-phase pilot project, which uses the intelligent lighting control solution to determine its efficacy in saving energy, increasing the efficiency and providing information on the status or condition of the lights used in the trial.

Improving efficiency through intelligent lighting

Fleming added that the in the project phases to follow, Sensus VantagePoint intelligent lighting solution will be used for “a larger and more dispersed population of lights to further evaluate the effectiveness and capabilities of the system.”

The intelligent lighting solution includes a lighting control module, lighting control software and the FlexNet communication network – a long-range radio network over which data is carried.

“The FlexNet system can be applied across multiple operations of our business and, by testing VantagePoint, the value of our network continues to reach new levels of optimization,” said Fleming.

Sensus VantagePoint is available to users as a customer owned and operated system or through a network hosting and software as a service (SaaS) business model.

The VantagePoint Solution is compatible with and fits into standard socket fixtures. The lighting control module, says Sensus, identifies the type of light (legacy or LED) and adjusts it to accommodate capabilities like flashing and dimming. The communication network thus allows users to monitor all lights at the same time.
