Reading, PA, U.S.A. — (METERING.COM) — April 10, 2007 – UGI Utilities Inc., a utility serving 315,000 natural gas customers in the U.S., is installing an AMR system for customers whose meters are located inside their homes, making them difficult to read. There are close to 50,000 such meters, and the installation will be completed before the end of the year.
At present meters are read once every two months, but once the AMR devices have been installed the utility will move to monthly reading – with all the associated benefits for both the company and its customers. The devices incorporate a battery-powered radio transmitter, and meter readings will be collected using a drive-by system.
UGI plans to expand deployment of the AMR system over the next few years, until all its meters can be read remotely.
