Another BPL pilot project announced

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has announced that it plans to test broadband over powerline (BPL) technology in a project which is expected to last a year, starting in September 2005. In the first phase SDG&E will focus on testing utility applications, including remote control of utility equipment, compatibility with advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), and obtaining accurate status reports about grid conditions for improved outage management.

The technology will be tested in several different geographic and demographic areas, and the utility – which provides energy to over 3 million consumers – has said that if it is compatible with its electric facilities it could pave the way for a host of functions that will benefit customers.
