In the US, multinational telecommunications corporation AT&T has established a Smart Cities Organisation in a bid to expand its reach in the global connected market.
According to Glenn Lurie, president and CEO, at AT&T Mobility: “The surge of connected devices shows there are endless possibilities for building smart cities.
“With more than 23 million connected devices globally, we’re building IoT platforms that work together to help create a better, more sustainable world.”
Apart from its recently established Smart Cities Organisation, AT&T also has a connected car organisation that the company claims offers customers enhanced safety, control, and convenience with use of its Car Connection 2.0 plug-in device.
Through a mobile app AT&T provides real-time updates provide for text blocking, speed alerts, driver scoring, vehicle maintenance notices.
According to a release, AT&T has already made headway in the smart cities market helping communities solve problems by connecting things like utility meters, street lights, and water systems.
Adding to its IoT-enabled smart city solutions, the Texas-based telecommunications company also provides cloud-based technology, that enables aggregation of real time energy usage and management.
The company is reported to be working with smart city partner organisations and academic institutions to create living labs in communities – aiming to demonstrate the benefits of connected cities.
GE & AT&T partner on smart utility solutions
Earlier this year, AT&T partnered with GE to develop smart metering and smart grid applications for the industrial Internet of Things.
Under the agreement, the two companies are working on solutions for smart grid and machine to machine communications, said John Lavelle, vice president of GE Digital Energy.
Mr Lavelle said the two companies are “propelling our shared vision for a more cohesive energy network. In short, we are connecting brilliant machines to the industrial internet.”
At AT&T’s internet of things foundry in Plano, Texas, the pair are working on new technologies including an advanced meter solution that merges GE’s smart meters and wireless solutions with AT&T’s cellular technology.
The solution is being piloted with two North American renewable energy customers, the companies said in a statement.
