In a combined statement, Terry Young, vice president of conservation and corporate relations at the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) in the Canadian province of Ontario said his “organisation is pleased to welcome SensorSuite to the list of more than 200+ projects that have received innovation funding from the IESO to advance conservation and demand management in Ontario.”
The Mississauga, Ontario based solutions developer said it is using the CAN$1.2m energy management funding to finance a project being carried out with a consortium of asset management firms.
[quote] The programme focuses on improving building’s energy management during on-peak demand periods using SensorSuite’s cloud based solution SuiteHeat to reduce energy waste through real-time monitoring and control of heating and cooling systems.
The “project will help enable property managers to better manage their electricity costs while maintaining tenant comfort and reducing demand placed on the grid,” added Young.
SensorSuite claims that its solution reduces power consumption by 20 to 30% in buildings. The firm predicts that on a global scale, buildings are responsible for one third of the carbon emissions and consume as much as 40% of the global energy.
“As asset managers face rising energy prices and challenges associated with older buildings, the need for systems that are smart enough to save money without human intervention and reduce operational risks have become an important part of their strategy,” added SensorSuite CEO, Robert Platek.
Energy management in Ontario
The news follows early May’s renewal of a demand response contract between IESO and smart grid integrator Rodan Solutions.
The renewal of the deal will allow the Mississauga, Ontario (Canada) based integrator to continue its involvement in the peaksaverPLUS demand response programme for Ontario’s Local Distribution Companies (LDC).
In a press statement, power utility IESO said Rodan Solutions will dispatch, support and manage over 320,000 Load Control Devices enrolled in the residential and small commercial demand response programme.
The roles of the integrator will include coordinating communication between IESO and participating LDC operators for demand response activations as well as remotely activate load control devices to reduce the electricity demand of enrolled appliances.
The renewal followed IESO recording a total savings of up to 160MW due to implementation of the demand response project in the province of Ontario.[Siemens bets on upliftment of smart grid R&D in Canada]
