Hunt Power, an energy systems and service provider, has announced its ability to collect energy usage data from Elster Electricity ALPHA Plus meters via satellite. Towards the end of last year Hunt Power launched a two-way satellite service to read GE KV2 series meters for utility customers, and with the new support for Elster ALPHA Plus meters, Hunt Power is able to conduct satellite meter reading for more than half the electricity meters used by utilities.
Satellite is a proven communications option that works without any 'line-of-sight' requirements, meaning that utilities no longer have to depend on changing cellular technology. Hunt Power's satellite service offers a daily meter read that captures stored 15-minute interval data. The data remains secure for several reasons, including the fact that the satellite signals are transmitted in short bursts on frequencies determined by momentary conditions.
