Atlanta, GA, U.S.A. — (METERING.COM) — September 13, 2011 – Saving money, avoiding wasting energy and more reliable service are the top three benefits of smart grids that consumers rank most highly, according to a new survey from the U.S. Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative (SGCC).
These were followed by more U.S. energy independence, protecting the environment, more control of home energy use, and more rate/billing choice. More than three-quarters of the survey respondents said these strongly or somewhat increase their support for the adoption of smart grids.
“We’ve found consumers to be remarkably consistent in their evaluation of the benefits commonly associated with the smart grid and smart meters,” said Patty Durand, SGCC executive director. “The fact that respondents rated practical and financial concerns on par with environmental, conservation and energy independence issues tells much about what consumers value and the factors that may influence their energy decisions.”
The survey was based on telephonic interviews with 1,200 residential consumers, with weighting for age, ethnicity, gender and region to align with national population parameters.
Data from surveys such as this should help energy and technology providers to develop messages and programs that meet consumer needs.
