Customer behaviour: BGE says EE program is working (by 1.8bn kWH a year)


US dual-fuel energy company Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) estimates its energy efficiency programme is achieving annual savings of 1.8 billion kWH, enough to power 165,000 homes for a year. 

BGE’s Smart Energy Savers Program comprises a number of different energy-saving solutions and incentives.

The energy company offers rebates and discounts on energy efficient lighting and has tallied that customers in central Maryland have bought more than 18 million green lighting products through the scheme.

Rewards to cut consumption

The program also includes BGE Smart Energy Rewards and BGE Smart Energy Manager, supported by cloud software provider Opower.

The BGE Smart Energy Rewards program is a voluntary program designed to encourage customers to use less electricity during summer peak hours, when energy demand is high.

BGE customers with a smart meter, regardless of their electricity supplier, are eligible to participate and will be supplied with targeted, personalized information about their energy consumption, prompting them to take action to reduce energy usage and save money on their monthly bills.

BGE Smart Energy Rewards also provides bill credits to residential customers who reduce their electricity usage below their typical usage during Energy Savings Days.

Since inception, more than 660,000 customers have earned credits by participating in Energy Savings Days.

Commercial energy efficient solutions

In addition to these residential programs, BGE has installed 1.5 million energy efficient measures to more than 17,000 business customers, over half of which are small businesses.

State-wide efficiency goal

The BGE Smart Energy Savers Program supports the EmPOWER Maryland Energy Efficiency Act’s goal of reducing both per capita energy consumption and per capita peak demand by 15 per cent by the end of 2015.
