US semiconductor company Enverv will partner with Malaysian meter maker Smart Meter Technologies on a range of PLC-enabled advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) products for residential, commercial and industrial use.

Smart Meter Technologies, preferred meter supply to Malaysian utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad, will use Enverv’s EV8000 power line communications (PLC) modem system on chip (SoC).

Azemi Zainol Abidin, chairman at Smart Meters Technologies, commented on the deal: “We have chosen EnVerv as our AMI technology partner due to performance of EnVerv’s modems under difficult network conditions and the fact that all necessary modem components including line driver, physical layer, media-access control layer and network layer are all integrated in the EV8000 single-chip SoC.

He added: “Supporting multiple AMI standards and different frequency bands on a single communication hardware allows us to service multiple AMI markets with a single hardware platform.”

The EV8000 soft-modem can also be programmed to operate in ITU-T G.9903 G3-PLC or ITU-T G.9904 PRIME modes by downloading the respective firmware code to the chip remotely over the powerline network, Enverv confirmed.
