Direct Energy launches prepay service in Texas

Dallas, TX, U.S.A. — (METERING.COM) — July 23, 2010 – North American energy provider Direct Energy has today launched a prepay (pay-as-you-go) electricity service for consumers in Texas who have smart meters installed.

The service is being introduced in the Dallas metro area, where over 1.1 million advanced meters have already been installed, and will be offered across the state as the meters are deployed.

In a statement Direct Energy said is the first of the three largest retail electric providers in Texas to offer the service. Customers will be charged for their actual metered usage as determined by the smart meters. They will be kept up-to-date daily on how much electricity they have used, how much they are spending, and how much money they have left on their account.

“Pay-as-you-go electricity is the first of many innovative solutions that are the result of the deployment of smart meters,” said Steven Murray, president of Direct Energy Residential. “This is a huge step-change for consumers, who now have the power to choose an easier way to pay, without a credit check or being tied to a long term contract that may carry a penalty. We believe many people will find it a better way to buy and pay for their electricity.”
