Des Moines, IA, U.S.A. — (METERING.COM) — May 28, 2007 – MidAmerican Energy, the largest utility in Iowa, will deploy a drive-by meter reading system from Itron Inc. for its 1.4 million gas and electric meters. The changeover will begin later this year, and is expected to be completed in 2010.
The Itron technology uses radio transmitters to send meter information to trucks that are equipped with receiver sets that transfer the information to the company’s billing system.
The utility says the change will make the task of reading meters more cost-effective and efficient. It plans to replace the 626,000 electric meters in the field, while a new module will be added to the 543,000 gas meters.
It has also assured consumers that energy rates will not be increased to pay for the new system.
