According to ECG, the collaboration will allow the consortium’s 52 utilities to efficiently migrate existing Automated Meter Reading (AMR) technology to a two-way AMI (Automated Metering Infrastructure) platform by remotely collecting readings from smart meters.
John Giles, president of ECG, commented: “ECG’s role is to serve as an advocate on behalf of our member utilities.”
In addition, Tantulus will enable ECG utilities access a variety of integrated applications including prepayment, outage management, remote dis and reconnections, water leak detection and data analytics on a single hub.
Giles added: “By incorporating a hosted solution in the model, we can expand the range of services that ECG offers while mitigating ‘resources constraints’ as a barrier to broader smart grid adoption.”
Tantulus’ grid automation
Peter Londa, president of Tantalus said; TUNet – the Tantalus Utility Network will provide ECG a scalable path to full smart grid automation which is easily attainable by all utilities, regardless of size.”
Tantalus claims TUNet, utilizing the Linux software, will enhance utilities’ existing AMR investments such as ERT infrastructure, with bi-directional communications.
[quote]TUNet will extend the useful life of existing un-depreciated infrastructure, ensure flexibility and future scalability for ECG utilities, improving response time to events and improving customer service.
Tantalus in the US
Since last year, more than 20 municipal and cooperative utilities, including ECG members Marietta Power and Water and the City of Blakely integrated TUNet into their grid systems.
In Q4 2015, electric utility People’s Energy Cooperative selected Tantalus to deploy an IP-based network for an AMI system in Minnesota.
The deal came as People’s Energy Cooperative aimed to upgrade its ageing power line carrier system to implement operationally efficient applications and provide beneficial energy management tools to its 23,000 members.
Commenting on the development, Elaine Garry, CEO of People’s Energy, said: “As a cooperative utility, we hold earnestly to our commitments to adopt innovative energy solutions that enable us to provide reliable and reasonably priced energy services.”
