Canada partners on energy storage technologies


The established Alberta Storage Alliance (ASA) will act as a platform to help stakeholders in the province’s energy landscape to ensure grid reliability through increased integration of renewable energy sources and storage systems with the grid.

ASA is made up of 12 members including S&C Electric, General Electric and Rocky Mountain Power.

The alliance will work with the Alberta Electric System Operator, the Alberta Utilities Commission, Market Surveillance Administrator and the Alberta government to help the Canadian province to record significant benefits from its Interconnected Electricity system.

The establishment of the alliance is in line with the Alberta government’s Climate Leadership Plan released in November 2015.

The plan aims to shift the province’s power generation from fossil fuels towards renewable energy, hence the need for more energy storage infrastructure to store power generated from renewable energy sources. [Canada could get third of its electricity from wind].

Energy storage and smart energy in Canada

The development follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Tata Power Delhi distribution, Smart Grid Canada and Ryerson University to share the latest trends in smart technology and in the distribution sector

The three parties agreed to share knowledge in areas such as, co-innovation in the area of renewable energy including energy storage, electric vehicle charging, joint research and development in smart grid technologies and sharing of best practices through process and result benchmarking.

The MoU stated that, “Tata Power-DDL will closely work with them for implementing their learning on advanced metering infrastructure, especially in smart metering and time of the day metering.” [Energy storage: DNV GL sets out to create global standard].

The document also noted that the collaboration “will help Tata Power-DDL in working together towards designing the solution for addressing the complexities like expanding its roof top solar landscape to 400 MW by 2024.”

It added that, “with renewable energy as part of the power portfolio, the electrical grid would become complex and needs to be dealt with greater focus with respect to its planning and design so as to optimally use the network assets and renewable resources.”
