The US based energy storage solutions provider will develop a 2MW storage system which SCE will use to store electricity generated from renewable energy sources.
The system is expected to help SCE ensure grid stability. The energy storage plant will be installed at the Irvine Business District complex in California to help the utility meet its growing demand of power due to a rise in business activities at the complex.
The energy storage system will comprise 2,500 Lion batteries and will be able to supply the grid with power for four continuous hours.
In addition to the Lion batteries, Powin Energy will integrate its software ‘Battery Pack Operating System’ to remotely control the storage system.

Grid stability and energy storage in the US
In late August, AES Energy Storage signed two energy storage contracts with US power utility San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) to help the utility firm ensure grid reliability in San Diego.
Under the two deals, AES will develop two energy storage systems able to generate 37.5MW of electricity.
The system will also be able to feed the power to the grid for four continuous hours. The construction of the systems is expected to be complete by January, 2017.
The storage solution will include Samsung SDI batteries and power conversion technologies developed by Parker Hannifin.
Under the first contract, AES will develop a 30MW power storage plant at the utility’s substation in Escondido.
The system is claimed to be the largest electricity storage system in the US.
The two firms will also construct a 7.5MW system in El Cajon.
