Energy delivery tech initiative aim $20m in consumer savings

The launched programme Working for Advanced Transmission Technologies (WATT) will ensure the development and implementation of new technologies and regulation, helping utilities reduce transmission grid congestion costs. Grid congestion is a situation whereby an energy transmission or distribution system is unable to transport the energy capacity required to meet demand.

WATT will work with regulatory authorities and utility companies to expand the country’s clean energy usage and help residential and business consumers save $20 billion over the next ten years.

According to a statement, the launch of the initiative is part of plans to upgrade the US energy transmission network by employing “advanced power flow control, dynamic line ratings, topology optimization, and potentially other technologies that can deliver more energy to customers over existing grids.”

Todd Ryan of Smart Wires, chairperson of WATT, added: “We have technologies that can bring tremendous benefits to business and households…The question is whether we can put the right incentives in place so that utilities who deploy them will share in the rewards. That will be our goal.”

Meanwhile, a new accelerator programme is aiming to increase the rate of disruption even more. In collaboration with Energy Australia, Startupbootcamp has launched its accelerator in Melbourne to vet the brightest minds in the industry and hopefully uncover the next billion-dollar idea.

EnergyAustralia Next Gen Executive, Andrew Perry, says the accelerator programme is an opportunity to unearth fresh thinking and bring innovative ideas to market.

“How often have we seen great ideas born in someone’s workshop or garage?” asks Perry.

“The accelerator programme is about making those great ideas real and developing the next innovation that helps customers use energy in ways that save them money and help the environment.
