Enterprise IoT: White paper analyses building energy management

Enterprise IoT is defined as sensors such as HVAC that produce data within a smart buildings infrastructure resulting in increased operational efficiencies.

In the report ‘Enterprise Internet of Things’, Daintree Networks analyses features that organizations focus on when implementing wireless controls.

The report highlights benefits brought about by Enterprise IoT such as transition of light fixtures from a binary function device to a node of data communication assisting facility managers learn more about their energy usage.

The Californian-based provider of energy efficiency solutions said it believes lighting is the first focus area followed by HVAC that companies tend to focus on.

In third place comes a system for analyzing plug loads, allowing the company to look at all machines in a facility, including printers, copiers, or heavier machinery, that are plugged into outlets.

Enterprise IoT – 10-year plan

Noah Goldstein, research director with Navigant, added that while lighting, HVAC and plug load may be the obvious first steps, organisations need to think about a 10-year energy plan and then make decisions about retrofits that fit into that plan.

The integration of systems, as well as the integration of communications between the various groups involved within an organization, is necessary when planning for the long-term, says Mr Goldstein.

The report also highlights how energy managers need to consider five elements including compliance with state regulations, wireless control solutions, open standards, operational efficiencies and reporting when creating a long term plan.

As companies start thinking about integrating wireless systems, they need to begin pushing vendors and suppliers, recommends Goldstein.

“Be proactive. Tell them, ‘I want an integrated system rather than what you’ve got on the shelf.’ I think if vendors are pushed and they know it’s something they can sell, they will develop and supply it.”
