First North American gas meter with remote disconnect capability released

Liberty Lake, WA, U.S.A. — (METERING.COM) — May 12, 2010 – The North American market’s first gas meter with an integrated remote disconnect valve, the METRIS® Remote Disconnect (RD) residential meter, has been released by Itron.

The meter also incorporates the company’s 100G Datalogging Gas ERT® module, all in a complete, compact and easy-to-install package.

The integrated valve, combined with the two-way communication capabilities of the 100G module, enables advanced shut-off features and innovative data collection. This functionality will help gas utilities ensure community safety, streamline operations, improve customer service and enhance the revenue stream.

“The ability to shut down gas service at critical times gives gas utilities enhanced safety and control,” said Carl Porter, marketing director of gas solutions for Itron. “The METRIS RD helps utilities ensure the safety of their employees and customers, as well as reduce operating expenses and their impact on the environment from day-to-day operations.”

With a modular design, maintenance free operation and highly accurate measurement, the METRIS gas meter has offered a dependable metering solution for residential applications. Remote disconnect functionality is actuated using Itron’s handheld computers.

The METRIS RD will evolve to become an integral component of Itron’s ChoiceConnect™ Gas AMI solution.
