US utility successfully deploys Survalent tailored SCADA system


In a press statement, FPUD said the agreement led to a successful deployment of the ‘Survalent ONE SCADA system’ in utility’s grid consisting of 25,000 consumers.

FPUD believe the deployed dual redundant SCADA system with a SmartVU advanced graphical interface, will improve flexibility in the utility’s operations and energy distribution for increased grid reliability and customer satisfaction.

The system comprises of a WebSurv application to help managers monitor SCADA information for improved and secure internal communications, Metering & Smart Energy International has learned.

The SCADA system will allow FPUD access to operator summaries, substation line diagrams, alarms, and distribution network maps via the SurvCentral application.

Edward Kobeszka, Regional Sales VP for the Western US said: “Franklin PUD can quickly leverage the new Survalent ONE™ functionality with SmartVU to gain significant and early value.”

Previously, FPUD utilised a system integrated within the Benton PUD Survalent SCADA system.

Kobeszka added: “Franklin recognised the need to own and operate their system on a single platform for advanced functionality and will be able to grow with the system adding features and functionality as needed.”

SCADA systems’ adoption in the US

In Q2 2015, US electrical utility National Grid also completed installation of a SCADA system with Swiss automation company ABB supplying the technology.

The project involved upgrades to the National grid’s transmission and distribution control centres in upstate New York and Massachusetts in a bid to standardise systems with the use of ABB’s network management solutions.

The utility said deployment of the integrated solution will increase reliability of the grid and strengthen service to its 3.4 million energy customers on the US East coast.

The Swiss company was responsible for the design, engineering, software, hardware and system implementation of the SCADA/energy management system, along with its related services.

System integration capabilities of the solution included the use of Common Information Model, system redundancy and scope for expansion.

The SCADA system is also equipped with capabilities that can assist the US utility to meet its cyber security requirements (NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection).
