New Jersey utility upgrades gas distribution infrastructure


The energy provider will replace its existing 3.7 miles of gas distribution pipes with new pipelines as part of efforts to modernise its grid infrastructure.

Joe Forline, vice president of gas operations at PSE&G, said: “These upgrades are part of PSE&G’s three-year program to replace 510 miles of ageing gas infrastructure throughout New Jersey.

“After decades of being in the ground, old cast iron pipes can crack and unprotected steel may corrode. The new durable, plastic pipes will improve reliability, reduce the possibility of leaks, and ensure the continued safety of gas service for customers.”

The project is expected to be completed by September.

Following the complete construction of the new gas distribution pipelines, customers of PSE&G will have their service disconnected for about four hours awaiting reconnection to the new distribution line.

Smart meters and gas distribution management

In related news, in the US, Indiana-based energy holding company Vectren has in the last quarter of 2016 published its 15-month plan to install automated meter reading (AMR) devices in its service territories in Ohio state.

Under its rollout plan, Vectren plans to install encoder receiver transmitters (ERTs) on its gas meters in the western and central parts of Ohio.

The utility company said it is also installing new ERTs for smart meters currently using old ERT models in Fort Loramie, Jackson Center, Minster, New Bremen, Sidney, Bellefontaine, Huntsville, Lakeview, Russells Point and West Liberty.

ERTs help the company to reduce its operational costs associated with door to door meter readings. The system uses radio signals to transmit accurate gas consumption data to Vectren staff driving by gas meters with installed ERTs.

The automated gas metering system is intended to improve the efficiency of the utility’s natural gas infrastructure and enhance customer experience.
