In the US state of Ohio, Glenville town is set to deploy an automated meter reading infrastructure for its water division.According to the Daily Gazette, the automated meter reading infrastructure programme will require investment of up to $1.8 million to equip residential and commercial water consumers with smart meters.
The programme will cover up to 5,500 metering points to help the town’s water department eliminate estimated billing through automation of water billing process.
By automating its billing process, Glenville town says it will optimise its revenue collection through accurate and timely water billing.
Chris Koetzle, a supervisor at Glenville town, said: "This will take what is now a three-month process and turn it into a three-day process.”
Currently, consumers in Glenville read their meters on their own and send read data to the town’s utility division for billing purposes.
The installation of the automated meter reading infrastructure will enable workers at Glenville town’s water department to drive by neighbourhoods for remote collection of water consumption data from water meters.
The project will allow Glenville town to bill its customers on a monthly basis unlike in recent years when consumers were billed on an annual basis.
Glenville town will increase its water tariffs by $10 per annum to recover the capital to be spent towards the installation of automated water meters.
The project will likely be completed by 2018.

Meanwhile, in Southern Africa, the Zimbabwean government ordered the country’s water authority ZINWA to deploy smart prepaid water meters for all city and municipal councils.
The installation of smart prepaid water meters will help ZINWA recover up to $140 million in water debts.
Oppah Muchinguri Kashiri, the minister of Environment, Water and Climate, said: "… Both local authorities and residents will need to use what they can afford…"
