PSE&G embarks on $1.2bn grid resiliency initiative

US utility Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), in partnership with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, has started a programme to improve grid resiliency during severe weather.

PSE&G is investing $1.2 billion to expand its use of advanced technologies to ensure remote monitoring and control of gas and electric networks.

The programme will enable expanded use of microprocessor relays, installation of new Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) equipment and deployment of a centralised Distribution SCADA Master Station.

This enables rapid diagnosis of circuit conditions during severe weather events.

Jorge Cardenas, PSE&G Vice President of Asset Management and Centralized Services. “Our investment in smart grid technologies has improved our ability to assess damage during storms, prevent power outages and get the lights back on faster when outages do occur.

“When Superstorm Sandy hit, it was difficult to gauge just how bad the damage was until PSE&G crews were deployed to the scene.”

The project will increase the number of PSE&G customers served by an advanced technology system from 650,000 to 2.1 million, 91% of the utility’s total customers.

The project has already received recognition as the 2018 POWERGRID International and DistribuTECH Grid Optimisation Project of the Year during the DistribuTECH Conference.
