Mississauga, ON, Canada — (METERING.COM) — September 6, 2006 – Canadian utility Hydro One Networks Inc. has begun installing some 15,000 smart meters in part of its service territory, to comply with the provincial government’s initiative to install smart meters in all Ontario homes and small businesses by 2010.
The utility is working with Psion Teklogix, a global provider of solutions for mobile computing and wireless data collection. Psion Teklogix’ WORKABOUT PRO computers are being used to support the smart meter installations. Hydro One will use this pilot project of 15,000 meters to evaluate the Psion mobile solution for possible use in supporting the mass deployment of smart meters to its 1.2 million customers.
Hydro One project lead Gord Reynolds says: “Hydro One field workers use a custom change meter order application, and the WORKABOUT PRO was a natural choice for a mobile device because of the ease at which the PC-based application could be integrated. Our hope is to see this solution run successfully in the community rollout trial and grow to become a large-scale field force application that can be replicated in similar installations across the province.”
