India’s Tata selects Semtech for LoRaWAN IoT network

US-based analogue and mixed signal semiconductor company Semtech and global telecommunications company Tata Communications have partnered to deploy an Internet of Things network in Indian cities.

Tata said it chose Semtech for its Low Power Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) technology, which has been trialled in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.

According to a company release, Semtech and its partners within the LoRa Alliance network – an organisation working toward standardising LoRaWAN technology for IoT applications – have contributed to the Tata Communication network through the provision of LoRaWAN-certified transceivers, modules, and other products and services.

Tata Communications, owned by Indian business conglomerate the Tata Group, proposed that a LPWAN wireless network, which is optimised for ultra-low power consumption, would allow devices an extended lifetime to last more than a decade without replacement.

Semtech claims that its LPWAN communication technology has significant reach enabling communications in deep water and up to 50m underground.

In a smart city context, the LPWAN network is suitable for IoT applications in metro stations, car parks and other smart building applications.

IoT is expected to infiltrate every city vertical, from predictive waste management to smart electricity meters.

Commenting on the adoption of a smart communication network to enable IoT in smart city applications, Tri Pham, chief strategy officer at Tata Communications, said: “We see a massive need for a new smart network to enable intelligent solutions for a variety of M2M applications to facilitate a simpler and smarter way of life and at a lower cost of ownership.

Mr Pham added: “These trials are just the beginning, we intend to deploy this network across India and invite customers with IoT projects to test it, along with us, end-to-end.”
