Canadian municipality to manage water infrastructure with IoT network

In Ontario, the municipal region of Waterloo partnered with IoT network operator eleven-x to improve management of its water resources.

According to a statement, eleven-x will deploy its LoRaWAN low-power wide area IoT communications network to provide connectivity to multiple sensors and devices to remotely collect real-time data regarding the quality and quantity of water.

The project will help the municipality to understand how much water it sources and distributes to its 570,000 customers.

In previous years, the region of Waterloo used a manual process to measure its water levels. The utility division distributed its water from some 585 water measuring and storage wells. To gather accurate data on how much water is sourced and distributed, Waterloo collected data from the measuring wells several times over the course of the year.

The region claims the process of measuring its water manually delayed the water division in making an informed decision on how water sources and distribution infrastructure should be managed.

Eleven-x claims the system will provide Waterloo with real-time notifications on the performance of its water distribution infrastructure including alerts on water temperature and pressure, and well water level fluctuations.

Eric Hodgins, Manager of Hydrogeology and Source Water in the Waterloo region, said: “The technology may allow us to connect our wells directly with our water operations management system and give us the ability to advance the way we monitor and manage this crucial resource.”

“Real-time updates on our wells will give us a better understanding of what is happening with our water supply sources and could really improve this key service we provide to the residents of our Region. The opportunity to reduce our costs is a real bonus,” added Nancy Kodousek, director of Water Services in the Waterloo region.

IoT communications network

However, in late January, the municipality of Shawinigan in Quebec (Canada) partnered with a wireless communications firm to deploy a smart city communications network.

In a press statement, the municipality said it completed its deployment of a wireless communications network ‘Fabric Connect’ to ensure a reliable and secure connection with its fire, library and water departments. Read more…
