Dominica Republic deploys smart meters AMI for tourism areaIn the Caribbean, Dominican Republic electrical utility Consorcio Energético Punta Cana Macao (CEPM) has chosen GE to deploy more than 14,000 smart meters as well as an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system in a bid to improve grid efficiency in the tourism area of Bávaro and Punta Cana.

GE will deliver its Grid IQ point-to-multipoint AMI in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic, which receives 60% of tourists that come to the country making grid reliability a high priority, said Roberto Herrera, executive director at CEPM.

Mr Herrera said: “GE’s smart meters and Grid IQ advanced metering infrastructure solutions will allow us to connect our smart meter infrastructure across our entire service territory with minimal network requirements.

“They also will give us important real-time information to help us better understand what we can do to optimize our electrical grid.”

CEPM’s service area includes a fast-growing hotel and resort comprising more than 60,000 hotel rooms, which makes grid reliability an important factor in the Dominican Republic’s tourism industry.

GE’s meters and AMI solution featuring random phase multiple access network radio technology developed by On-Ramp Wireless, will facilitate two-way communication between CEPM and its customers.

Stabilizing Hawaii’s grid

Hawaii Rooftop solar upgrade microinvertersIn other island news, Hawaiian Electric is worked with California microinverter company Enphase Energy to improve stability of the grid.

Enphase Energy has upgraded the operating behavior of around 800,000 of its smart microinverters installed in Hawaii in a bid to better integrate rooftop PV systems into Hawaii’s changing island grids.

Enphase made software updates remotely to allow rooftop solar installations to be more tolerant when a problem occurs on the grid.

Commenting on the project, Raghu Belur, co-founder and vice president of products and strategic initiatives at Enphase, said: “Regulators and utilities across the US are working to determine the value that distributed energy resources provide to the grid, in an effort to inform policy development and procurement decisions.

“This most recent collaboration between Enphase and Hawaiian Electric provides a quantifiable example of how our distributed technology, with its high-granular data and control, can provide immense value and save ratepayers millions of dollars in upgrade costs.”
