Global energy technology company Itron has announced that its Total Outcomes for smart payment has received Standard Transfer Specification (STS) certification. The company’s Total Outcomes for smart payment solution is Itron’s global cloud-based offering, which provides prepayment vending and customer management software-as-a-service and managed services.
The certification marks first multi-commodity prepayment solution to be certified by Standard Transfer Specification (STS) Association. STS is a secure message system for carrying information between a point-of-sale and a meter, and is currently finding wide application in electricity metering and payment systems.
Itron notes that the offering streamlines the deployment of Itron’s smart payment solutions, from keypad meters to smart payment meters, for electric and gas utilities.
According to a release, the newly acquired STS certification validates the interoperability of the smart payment offering and ensures that system components from different manufacturers of prepayment systems can work together.
It adds that the certification also confirms that the appropriate encryption key management practices are applied to safeguard the security of the prepayment transactions of utilities operating STS systems.

The Washington-based technology company claims that its certified solution provides the flexibility for utilities to move from a smart payment system to a smart metering post payment system as needs change in the future.
“Itron Total Outcomes for smart payment [makes it] easier and faster for utilities and their customers to access the benefits of prepayment technology,” said Bruce Douglas, senior vice president and general manager of software and services at Itron.
“With STS certification, they can rest assured that our technology is interoperable and uses open standards.”
Henty Waker, managing director at iPay (Pty) Ltd, a STS-certified energy and payment solutions provider, added: “iPay has a long history of collaboration with Itron for smart payment processing. We played an important role in helping Itron’s smart payment offering secure STS certification by developing software that is used by the solution and managing the certification process.
