Days after the Korea Smart Grid Association called for government support to promote the export potential of smart grid technology, the country’s state-run power company Korea Electric Power Corpo (Kepco) has bagged a deal in North America.

Kepco confirmed this week it has signed a US$9.1 million contract to create a microgrid in Canada, the first deal for the state-run power company in North America, The Korea Herald reported.

As part of the memorandum of understanding, Canada’s fourth-largest power supplier PowerStream will use Kepco technology to develop micro and smart grids in its service area.

The agreement also gives Kepco the option to bid to update PowerStream’s supervisory control and data acquisition systems.

Kepco said its micro grid system based on an energy management system can control wind and solar power as well as other renewable energy sources. 

The company said the agreement also outlines a separate US$3.67 million joint Kepco-PowerStream investment plan for the Penetanguishene region of Ontario, according to The Korea Herald.

The deal follows an announcement in October 2014 of Kepco’s strategy to turn its smart grid technologies into a global export.

Kepco said it plans to spend US$155 million between 2015 and 2017 on developing smart grid technologies.

Meanwhile, in other smart grid news, US non-profit technology development company Battelle and its partner Grupo AIA’s subsidiary Elequant have evaluated smart grid technology with a view to using it to help astronauts in Nasa’s deep space exploration missions.

Battelle said that the Holomorphic Embedding Load-Flow Method algorithm is designed to facilitate reliable operation of deep-space manned missions beyond Mars, and terrestrial applications to all-electric passenger aircraft, reports Aerospace Technology.

Said to comply with the space agency’s standards, the technology will help spacecraft pilots with fault-tolerant autonomous control of power management and distribution systems.

In the event of a problem with the power system, the tool will generate a solution for recovery, enabling astronauts to carry on with other tasks.

As part of the second phase of the contract, the companies will evaluate an Earth-bound microgrid representing a deep space module’s power system.

Headquartered in Ohio, Battelle has expanded its presence into smart grid segment following a deal with Gridquant to distribute its software products in the US, US territories, Canada and India.
